Large Purchasers of Green Power

Port Authority of New York and New Jersey

January 2009 - The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey recently announced that it has awarded contracts to purchase $2.5 million dollars of verified greenhouse gas (GHG) offsets in 2009 and 2010 to meet its goals of being carbon neutral by 2010. To assist with these efforts, the agency’s Board of Commissioners approved contracts with five companies to provide carbon offsets and related services. The offsets must meet rigorous quality standards and at least 75% of the offsets must be generated in the region. Starting in early 2009, the agency also will allow commuters to purchase carbon offsets through a new Web site.

The announcement is part of the agency’s broad sustainability policy, which includes reducing GHG emissions 80% by 2050, through a combination of capital investments, operational changes, and carbon offsets; promoting sustainability among tenants and customers; and adapting facilities to handle future climate changes.
