Large Purchasers of Green Power

San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART)

January 2008 - The San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) Board of Directors voted unanimously to lift the agency's price cap on the purchase of alternative energy, paving the way for BART to meet its goal of deriving at least 20% of its energy from alternative renewable sources, such as wind and landfill gas, by 2010. According to a January 19 article in the San Francisco Chronicle, the Northern California Power Agency, which purchases and generates electricity for BART and more than a dozen other public entities, has agreed to supply BART with 7 MW of renewable energy. BART uses 400,000 MWh of electricity annually and is among the top 10 electricity consumers in Northern California.
