Large Purchasers of Green Power

Yahoo!

July 2007 - Silicon Valley Power (SVP), the municipal electric utility of the City of Santa Clara, Calif., announced several new or increased purchase commitments totaling more than 10 million kWh for the utility's Santa Clara Green Power. Santa Clara University increased its annual purchase commitment fivefold to 8 million kWh and both Yahoo! and National Semiconductor are purchasing 1.6 million kWh annually, or the equivalent of one-half of the annual output of one large-scale wind turbine. The utility offers renewable energy certificates (RECs) sourced from newly constructed wind and solar projects located in California at a price of 1.5¢/kWh above standard rates. In May, the City endorsed a community renewable energy challenge to boost program participation from 6% to 10% by the end of 2007.
