June 2010 - American University announced the purchase of renewable energy certificates (RECs) equivalent to 100 percent of the university's 53 million kilowatt-hours of annual electricity usage. The RECs are supplied by Renewable Choice Energy through the Langdon Wind Energy Center in North Dakota.
With the purchase, the university is now the 12th largest purchaser of green power in the nation on the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Green Power Partnership Top 50 Purchasers List and has been honored as one of the top 54 colleges in EPA's 2009-2010 College and University Green Power Challenge.

February 2003 - Washington Gas Energy Services (WGES) and Community Energy Inc. announced wind power purchases by four organizations and businesses based in Washington, DC and surrounding areas. The new green power purchasers include:
- American University, which has agreed to buy wind power to meet 5% of its electricity needs for the next five years,
- Norm Thompson Outfitters, a catalog retailer, which is purchasing almost 20% of the power output of a 1.5-MW wind turbine for its distribution center in Kearneysville, West Virginia,
- The World Wildlife Fund, an environmental organization with 1.2 million U.S. members, which is purchasing wind power to supply 10% of the electricity used for its Washington, DC office, and
- Ecoprint, a printing and mail services company in Silver Spring, Maryland, which has committed to purchase wind power for 100% of the company's electricity needs.
The power will be supplied from the 66-MW Mountaineer Wind Energy Center located in West Virginia, which began operating in December 2002 and is now the largest wind generating facility in the eastern United States. With the new commitments, WGES now has nearly 5,000 residential and small commercial customers in the Washington, DC-area supporting a total of 3.3 MW of wind energy generation.
