Large Purchasers of Green Power

City of Aspen

March 2005 - The Aspen City Council unanimously approved a resolution calling for the city to obtain about 80% of its electricity needs from renewable energy sources and undertake a variety of other actions to address global climate change. Under the "Canary Initiative," so-named in reference to the old practice among miners of carrying a caged canary into mines to detect deadly gases, the city plans to increase its purchases of wind energy by 10% in 2005 and by another 16.5% in 2006—the city already obtains more than 50% of its electricity from renewable energy sources including hydro and wind. The city also plans to inventory its greenhouse gas emissions, set targets for reducing emissions, and perform an assessment of the city's vulnerability to climate change.
