Large Purchasers of Green Power


Toyota Motor Sales USA


March 2009 - Toyota and Sunpower, a manufacturer of high-efficiency solar panels, announced the completion of a 2.3-megawatt rooftop photovoltaic (PV) system that began operation in early October at Toyota’s North America Parts Center California (NAPCC) in Ontario, California, making it the largest single-roof PV installation in North America. The Sunpower system is expected to generate approximately 3.7 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, or nearly 60 percent of the total electricity needs of the facility.

GE Energy Financial Services will finance, own and operate the solar power system, providing Toyota with immediate savings and a long-term hedge against rising peak power prices. Toyota will retain ownership of the renewable energy certificates (RECs) associated with the system. The system is the second, large PV system installed on a U.S. Toyota facility; in 2003, a 501-kilowatt PV system was installed on Toyota’s South Campus headquarters building in Torrance, California.

May 2000 - Toyota Motor Sales USA reaffirmed its commitment to green power by signing a contract with GreenMountain.com to purchase 100% renewable energy to power several of its California-based operations. Under the agreement, Toyota will purchase approximately 40 million kWh of renewable energy, with 5% of the power to come from new wind resources. Toyota became one of the first large companies to commit to green power shortly after the California market opened to competition. The GreenMountain.com deal replaces an earlier green power purchase agreement with Edison Source, which stopped marketing green power in November 1999.

June 1998 - The Center for Resource Solutions (CRS) announced that Toyota Motor Sales USA (TMS) is the first customer company approved to use the Green-e certification seal in its marketing and advertising materials. Toyota recently announced that it will power several Southern California facilities with EarthSourcesm electricity, which is a Green-e certified renewable electricity product. Toyota is currently developing communications materials to publicize the company's purchase of environmentally-friendly power. CRS Director Jan Hamrin notes that "When people see Toyota using the Green-e logo, they know the company is taking its corporate, social, and environmental responsibility seriously."

May 1998 - Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), the fourth largest auto company in the U.S., announced on Earth Day that it will become the single largest purchaser of 100% renewable power in the world. All of the electricity for Toyota's U.S. headquarters and several other California facilities, approximately 38 million kWh per year, will now be supplied by Edison Source's EarthSourcesm 100 product. TMS president and CEO, Yoshi Ishizaka, stated, "Toyota has a responsibility to the environment that runs beyond designing, building, and selling clean, efficient, and high-quality cars and trucks. We must also reevaluate every part of our operations from recycling waste paper to purchasing renewable resource electricity."
