Chelan County PUD Supports Green Power.

April 2001 - Chelan County Public Utility District (PUD) plans to implement a program, Sustainable Natural Alternative Power (SNAP), that will allow its 35,000 customers in north-central Washington state to support the development of local, small-scale renewable energy projects. Customers can donate a fixed amount each month—a minimum donation of $2.50 is recommended—to support the development of grid-connected solar and wind energy projects within the county. The funds will be distributed annually to customers that install solar or wind systems of up to 1 MW in size. In addition, the utility will pay green power producing customers a percentage of the wholesale power rate, which is currently about 25¢/kWh, for all energy produced over the life of the system. It is expected that solar output will be most highly valued because of its availability during on-peak summer periods.

To kick off the program, Chelan will install a 10-12 kW photovoltaic project at a community college in Wenatchee. The project is supported in part with by a grant from the Bonneville Environmental Foundation.
