Green Power Sales Grow in Maine

March 2004 - Maine Green Power Connection (MeGPC), a program designed to help raise the visibility of green power options in Maine, announced that 1,550 electricity customers, including 60 businesses and institutions, are purchasing more than 30 million kWh of green electricity annually. The Green Power Connection Web site lists 15 green power providers that offer products to Maine customers. With the availability of these options, all state customers now have access to green power.

MeGPC has established a goal of helping marketers enroll 5,000 green power customers in 2004 and 60,000 customers, or 5% of the state's total electricity customer base, by 2008. The effort is funded through grants from the Henry P. Kendall Foundation and the John Merck Fund. With this support, MeGPC is also launching a 13-week public awareness campaign to raise the visibility of green power, which will include advertisements, workshops, conferences and other events.
