Iowa Muni Programs Underway

December 2003 - The Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities (IAMU) announced that all 137 municipally owned electric utilities in Iowa are developing green power programs as required by a state law adopted in 2001. Nearly 80 of the utilities are participating in IAMU's umbrella program, Green City Energy, which gives customers the ability to support renewable energy development from sources such as wind, solar, and biodiesel. Some utilities allow customers to make one-time or monthly contributions while other utilities offer customers the option of purchasing green power or renewable energy certificates. Although the Green City Energy program was only recently made available, five member utilities—Whittemore, Dayton, Montezuma, Fairbanks, and Lenox—have already achieved customer participation rates of 3% or higher.

Other Iowa municipal utilities are participating in either Missouri River Energy Services RiverWinds program or Basin Electric Cooperative's PrairieWinds program.
