March 1997 - Customers in Maine's newly restructured electricity market now have the opportunity to choose green power. Energy Atlantic, a retail marketer that also provides standard offer service in some parts of the state, is offering a 100% green power product, PureGreen Energy, to customers throughout the entire state. An average residential customer can purchase the green power product, currently a mix of existing biomass and hydro resources with some wind, for an extra $6 per month or a price premium of about 1.0¢/kWh. The product is also available to business customers.

Maine's restructuring law established a renewables portfolio standard (RPS), which requires marketers to obtain 30% of their power supplies from renewable energy sources. Under rules established by the Maine Public Utilities Commission, retail marketers must secure additional renewable resources to supply differentiated green power products.

Energy Atlantic's green product is the only competitive option currently available in Maine's electricity market, which opened to competition on March 1st. The company also provides standard offer service to residential customers in Central Maine Power's service territory as well as to some mid-sized business customers in the service territory of Maine Public Service.
