Green Mountain Energy Company announced that it is teaming with BP Solar to design and install solar electric systems for residential consumers in California. Under its Home Solar program, Green Mountain will handle all aspects of the system installation for the customer, including designing and ordering the systems, applying for permits and incentives, and conducting annual system check-ups for the first five years.
Three system sizes will be offered, ranging from 1 to 4 kilowatts (kW). After factoring in state incentives, the 1-kW system will cost approximately $7,000 and a 4-kW system approximately $22,000. A 2-kW system can supply the average California residence with about 50% of its annual power needs. Californians installing PV systems are eligible for rebate payments of $4,500/kW, or up to 50% of the system cost. Green Mountain estimates that most customers could recoup the system costs within about 10 years.
