First Illinois Utility Offers Green Power

The City of St. Charles has become the first utility in Illinois to offer a green pricing program to its customers. In partnership with ComEd and Community Energy Inc., the municipal utility is offering residents and businesses the ability to donate a fixed monthly amount, which will be used to purchase renewable energy certificates from ComEd. The certificates represent the output of local renewable energy projects, including landfill gas and a 51-MW wind project to be constructed just north of Peoria and completed in 2004.
