Sandia National Laboratories announced a 1-MW wind power purchase from Southwestern Public Service (SPS) that, under state law, will trigger the installation of a second wind turbine to supply the utility's Windsource program. Currently, 291 SPS customers are purchasing wind energy from a single 660-kW turbine located near Clovis, New Mexico.
The additional wind energy will be purchased through the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Albuquerque Operations Office and is expected to meet about 6% of the annual load of DOE's Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP). The laboratory plans to offset the cost of the wind power through savings from energy efficiency improvements. Sandia plans to competitively procure a total of up to 10 MW of wind power by 2010.
