Houston to Increase Renewable Energy Purchases

January 2016 - The City of Houston has signed an agreement with Reliant Energy to increase its purchase of renewable energy. Under the agreement, Reliant Energy, a subsidiary of Houston-based NRG Energy will continue to provide Green-e certified renewable energy certificates (RECs) to the city for another 12 months. This deal will help Houston meet 75 percent of its annual electricity demand with the city using more than 950,000 megawatt-hours of green power annually. The City of Houston recently entered the Top 30 Local Government list of the largest green power users in the Green Power Partnership.
