Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) has negotiated to purchase the entire output of NextEra Energy Resources' 75-megawatt (MW) Steele Flats Wind Farm. The wind farm began commercial operation earlier this month and the utility already has its first wholesale customer ready to buy much of the plant's electricity. Becton, Dickinson and Company (BD), a medical technology company, has entered into a 20-year agreement with NPPD to utilize 30 MW of the plant's capacity. BD plans to use the power to offset electricity use at its manufacturing facilities in Columbus and Holdrege, Nebraska. Wind power is not a new prospect for BD; in 2012 BD received the WindMade label for its global operations as a result of 35 percent of the company's electricity being sourced from wind power.
