eBay is partnering with Ormat in a joint development agreement to construct a five megawatt (MW) recovered energy generation (REG) power plant in Utah. The REG plant will capture waste heat and convert it into energy using an Ormat Energy Converter. Ormat will construct and operate the facility while generated electricity is transmitted and sold directly to eBay's new Salt Lake City, Utah data center. This direct sale is a result of recent state legislation passed in Utah which allows non-utility energy consumers to buy and transmit power directly from energy developers. The new agreement with Ormat brings eBay closer to its goal of sourcing eight percent of its electricity from cleaner sources by 2015.
