Chambersburg, PA has turned the local Blue Ridge Landfill into a renewable energy resource. The town is capturing methane from waste decomposition in the landfill and using that gas to power electric generators. After completing the 5.1-megawatt landfill gas project, 15 percent of the entire town's electricity is now coming from renewable energy; compared to 4 percent being used at the state level. The project was completed on time at a cost of $1.5 million, which was below the proposed budget.
