Volkswagen (VW) has initiated operation of a 9.5-megawatt (MW) solar farm at its Chattanooga, Tennessee, auto manufacturing facility. The commissioning of the facility confirms the LEED Platinum certification the manufacturer received from the U.S. Green Building Council for the facility. The plant is currently the only auto manufacturing facility in the world to achieve the LEED Platinum certification.
The JA Solar photovoltaic modules are expected to produce 13.1 million megawatt-hours of electricity each year, equivalent to 12.5 percent of the facility's annual energy needs. The system was developed and will be owned and operated by Silicon Ranch, selling power to Volkswagen under a 20-year power purchase agreement. The 9.5-MW capacity of the farm ranks the system as the largest array in the state of Tennessee.
