Google has announced a $75 million equity investment in the 50-megawatt (MW) wind farm installed and operating in Rippey, Iowa. In 2010, Google made its first attempt to green the Iowa grid by entering into a 114-megawatt power purchase agreement (PPA) with NextEra Energy's Story County II wind farm. Google operates a data center in Council Bluffs, Iowa. In contrast to Google's position as a power purchaser in the Story County II transaction, Google has invested directly in the Rippey, Iowa project. In the Rippey project, the developer, RPM Access, signed in Fall 2011 an agreement to sell the power produced by the project to Central Iowa Power Cooperative. Google's investment in the Rippey project brings the technology company's total commitments in the renewable energy sector to $990 million.
In addition to Google's 2010 Story County II PPA and its direct investment in the Rippey project, Google also entered into a 48-megawatt PPA in September 2012 to purchase wind power from the Canadian Hills Wind Project in Oklahoma.
