The Southern Minnesota Municipal Power Agency (SMMPA), which provides electricity for 18 municipally operated utilities in southern Minnesota, has completed the installation of two 950-kW wind turbines to supply customers of its green pricing program. Since December 2000, SMMPA member utilities have offered residential and business customers the option to purchase wind power in 100-kWh blocks at premiums ranging from 2.9¢/kWh to 3.5¢/kWh, depending on the utility. Customers fully subscribed the output of one wind turbine within the first two months of the program. As of December 2002, about 900 customers were participating in the program. SMMPA will own and operate the two Minnesota-based turbines, which are expected to generate at least 5 million kWh of electricity annually.
