The U.S. Navy has switched on a 13.78-megawatt (MW) solar array at its Naval Air Weapons Station at China Lake, California. The Navy will purchase the system's power through a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with an affiliate of MetLife, Inc. The project was designed and developed by SunPower. Using a long-term energy procurement authority (U.S. Code Section 2922A), the 20-year solar PPA at China Lake marks the first of its kind for a federal agency.
The array will generate enough electricity to account for 30 percent of China Lake's annual electricity demand and is expected to reduce the Navy's energy costs by roughly $13 million over the course of the agreement.
