Starbucks Becomes One of the Top Five Green Power Purchasers

November 2010 - The Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Green Power Partnership released its latest list of top green power purchasers. Retaining their places at the top of the list were Intel Corporation, Kohl's Department Stores, and Whole Foods Market. Entering the Top 5 were Starbucks (No. 4) and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania (No.5). Starbucks jumped 12 spots in the rankings after increasing its purchase from 237 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) to more than 537 million kWh, and it is now meeting 55% of its total purchased electricity use with green power. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania increased its purchase from 400 million kWh to 500 million kWh, and currently supplies 50% of its purchased electricity from green power.

Collectively, the top 50 largest purchases amount to more than 12.5 billion kWh annually, or approximately 70 percent of the green power commitments made by all EPA Green Power Partners.

EPA's Green Power Partnership works with more than 1,300 partner organizations that voluntarily purchase green power to reduce the environmental impacts of conventional electricity use. Overall, the partners buy nearly 18 billion kWh of green power annually.
