The Center for Resource Solutions, which manages the Green-e certification program, released its annual verification report detailing certified voluntary renewable energy sales for 2009. Total retail sales of Green-e Energy certified renewable energy reached 18 million megawatt-hours (MWh) in 2009, an increase of 43% over 2008.
At the end of 2009, 68 renewable energy certificates (REC) marketers, 219 utilities and electricity distributors, and 10 competitive electricity providers were offering Green-e Energy certified products to residential or commercial customers. More than 545,000 residential customers and more than 37,000 commercial customers across the U.S. and Canada purchased Green-e certified renewable energy during 2009, increases of 9% and 85%, respectively.
The Green-e Marketplace program had 57 companies participating, collectively purchasing 402,141 MWh. The Green-e Marketplace program licenses the Green-e logo for use on purchasers' web sites, marketing materials, and manufactured goods. Over 400 consumer products now display the Green-e logo. In addition, the Green-e Climate program, which certifies retail carbon offset products, began in February 2008 and had ten participants offering 16 products by the end of 2009.
