Google has purchased the total output of NextEra Energy Resources's 114-megawatt Story County II facility in Iowa through a 20 year power purchase agreement for $38.8 million. Google plans to resell the purchased output back to the grid in the regional spot market and retire the RECs associated with the wholesale power.
The deal is the first by Google Energy LLC, an entity formed in December 2009 to allow the company to procure large volumes of renewable energy by participating in the wholesale market.
In addition to wind power, Google has also taken advantage of corporate solar installations at its Mountain View headquarters, and has invested in startups such as AltaRock (geothermal), eSolar, and Makani Power (airborne wind turbines).
