Texas Achieves Record Increase in Voluntary Renewable Energy Purchases

May 2010 - The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) has reported that in 2009, 8.14 million megawatt-hours (MWh) of renewable energy were retired in the voluntary market, surpassing the 2008 record of 6.77 million MWh. By comparison, 6.79 million MWh of renewable energy were retired to satisfy Texas's renewable portfolio standard (RPS) in 2009, exceeding the Texas RPS goal 15 years early.

The Texas Legislature established the RPS as part of the restructuring of the state's electricity market in 1999 to increase incentives for renewable energy production. Electric providers may also voluntarily retire RECs to substantiate claims of green energy to consumers.
