NextEra Energy Resources has announced the launch of EarthEra Renewable Energy Trust, a program that will directly invest all proceeds from voluntary renewable energy certficate (REC) purchases by businesses and consumers into the construction of new wind and solar projects in the U.S. NextEra is a subsidiary of FPL Group, Inc., a national energy services provider and the owner of Florida Power & Light Company. NextEra will pay all marketing, administrative, and overhead expenses for the Trust and will not draw upon direct revenues from REC sales for these expenses.
To date, the EarthEra Trust has received commitments totaling $18 million from various corporate REC purchasers, including Sony Electronics Inc., Office Depot, HSBC-North America, REI, Norwegian Cruise Lines, University of Denver, and Loyola Marymount University. An initial set of renewable energy projects have not yet been announced. The Northern Colorado Wind facility in Logan County, Colorado is the first project that will receive funding from the Trust for new project development.
