PECO Energy, an electric utility subsidiary of Exelon Corporation serving 1.6 million electric customers in southeastern Pennsylvania, announced it will purchase about 4.1 million kWh of wind energy annually for the next three years, or the equivalent of 15% of the total energy use at its Philadelphia headquarters.
The purchase represents a 50% increase over its previous wind energy purchase and is part of a more than $15 million initiative to support Exelon 2020: A Low-Carbon Roadmap. Other environmental projects include the opening of PECO’s first ‘green building’, the installation of a new Crown Lights messaging system at the company’s Center City headquarters, upgrades to obtain Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification for a number of company buildings, the increased use of hybrid and biodiesel vehicles, and support for community and customer environmental and energy efficiency projects.
PECO has offered a voluntary wind energy option, PECO Wind, to its residential and business customers since 2004 and, to date, more than 36,000 consumers participate.
