SFO to Offer Air Travelers GHG Offsets

January 2009 - The San Francisco International Airport Commission has approved a pilot program that would enable air travelers to purchase certified greenhouse gas (GHG) offsets through three onsite kiosks. Under the program, which will be implemented by 3Degrees, passengers will be able to calculate the carbon emissions associated with their air travel and make a contribution using a credit card. The kiosks are scheduled to be available starting in the spring of 2009.

3Degrees will work with the Mayor’s Office and the Department of Environment to determine the sources of the emissions offsets for the program, which may include projects that generate renewable energy in developing countries, capture methane from agricultural processes, organic wastes, or coal mines, or support sustainable forestry. A portion of each offset purchase would go to the San Francisco Carbon Fund, which supports local projects such as energy-efficiency programs and solar panel installations for low-income housing, as well as efforts to convert waste oils into biodiesel fuels.
