PPL EnergyPlus, an electricity supplier serving customers in restructured markets of the mid-Atlantic region and a subsidiary of PPL Corporation, has announced a new program of voluntary options for customers to purchase renewable energy. The program, called Renewable Choice, will offer renewable energy certificates (RECs) to customers in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland and Delaware. The RECs will support local, regional, and national projects that are "new," defined by the program rules as operational after January 1, 2008.
Residential and small business customers located in Pennsylvania and New Jersey will have the option to buy 3, 6, or 12 RECs per year (each REC is the equivalent of 1,000 kWh of electricity) sourced locally in those states. These available purchase sizes are the equivalent of about 25%, 50% or 100% of the average residential customer’s electricity usage and are priced at a premium of about 3.2¢/kWh above standard electric rates, with a small discount for the larger purchase sizes. Customers in all four states have the option to purchase RECs sourced from mid-Atlantic regional resources for the lower price of about 2.8¢/kWh, with small discounts for the larger purchases.
