Bowdoin College, a liberal arts college located in Brunswick, Maine, announced that it has entered into an agreement to purchase green power from the 42-MW Mars Hill wind project in Northern Maine. Under the three-year deal, the college will purchase renewable energy certificates (RECs) from the UPC Wind affiliate that owns the Mars Hill wind project. With the new purchase, Bowdoin is currently offsetting approximately 70% of its campus electricity use with RECs produced in Maine. These voluntary REC purchases complement the renewable energy already provided in the college's competitive electricity supply as required by Maine's renewable portfolio standard (RPS) and bring Bowdoin's total green power usage to 100%.
