Over the last three months, the U.S. Air Force has nearly doubled its renewable energy purchases to 899 million kWh annually, making it the largest government green power purchaser and the third largest purchaser among public- and private- sector employers nationally. The green power, which is derived from biomass, geothermal, solar and wind resources, represents about 9% of the Air Force's total electricity use. The Air Force procures renewable energy in the form of nationally-sourced renewable energy certificates (RECs), as well as through utility green pricing programs and on-site renewable energy projects.
