Governor Edward G. Rendell announced that Pennsylvania is increasing the percentage of renewable energy it purchases to run state government operations. Under a modified contract with Community Energy Inc., the state will purchase 277 million kWh of renewable energy annually from wind (57%) and hydroelectric (43%) sources. The new purchase is equivalent to 28% of the state government's electricity needs, up from 20% last year. Its expanded purchase has earned Pennsylvania a spot on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Top 25 Green Power Partnership list.
