Fairfax County (Va.) has entered into a three-year contract with 3Degrees Group, Inc. (formerly the REC and Utility Partnership Division of 3 Phases Energy) to purchase more than 24 million kWh of wind energy through the Virginia Energy Purchasing Governmental Association. By the end of the contract term, wind power will account for 10% of the county's annual electricity consumption, up from 5% at present. The wind power will be generated primarily at the Locust Ridge Wind Farm in Schuylkill County, Pa.
The wind energy purchase is one component the County's commitment to a new national "Cool Counties" initiative, which will organize the nation's 3,000 counties to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The new agreement replaces a two-year purchase contract with Washington Gas Energy Services for 11.6 million kWh of renewable energy certificates (RECs) sourced from the Mountaineer Wind Energy Center in Tucker County, W.Va.
