Santa Clara Issues 10% Participation Challenge

The City of Santa Clara (Calif.) recently endorsed a community renewable energy challenge to boost participation in Silicon Valley Power's (SVP) Santa Clara Green Power program to 10% by the end of 2007. The program has already garnered a 6% customer participation rate after only two years in operation. Under the program, the utility's customers can purchase green power at a premium of 1.5¢/kWh above standard rates. Residential customers must participate at a 100% monthly usage level while large commercial and industrial customers can purchase an unlimited number of 1,000-kWh blocks. SVP operates the program in partnership with 3 Phases Energy (now serviced by 3Degrees), using renewable energy certificates (RECs) sourced from newly constructed wind and solar projects located in California.

SVP recently announced major green power purchases by two of its commercial customers: Westfield Valley Fair, part of the world's largest retail property group, is purchasing 1.6 million kWh annually, and Applied Materials, a global leader in nanomanufacturing technology solutions, is purchasing 8.2 million kWh annually.
