Penn State University will purchase green power to meet 20% of its electrical energy needs for the next five years, up from its previous commitment of 5%. Under a new set of contracts, the university will purchase 83.6 million kWh of green power annually, including Pennsylvania-based wind energy from Community Energy, Inc., national wind and biomass energy from 3 Phases Energy (now serviced by 3Degrees), and low-impact certified hydroelectric power from Sterling Planet, Inc. The university was able to increase its green power purchases by negotiating a lower average purchase price; the new contracts carry an average price of 0.5¢/kWh compared to 1.4¢/kWh under its previous wind energy contract.
