The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) announced an agreement with developer Lennar BVHP to create San Francisco's first neighborhood powered entirely by renewable energy. Under the agreement, the SFPUC will deliver cost-competitive renewable energy to the 1,600 new residential units and 300,000 square feet of commercial and retail space under construction at the site of the former Hunters Point Naval Shipyard.
Initially, the "Green Public Power Community" will be supplied from the city's extensive hydro and solar power portfolio, and later with other new renewable energy sources as they become available commercially. The power will be provided at rates equal to or lower than current retail and commercial electric rates. As part of the agreement, Lennar BVHP will contribute $2 million towards the cost of providing renewable energy to customers in the new neighborhood, such as rooftop solar systems.
