New York University (NYU) announced that it will purchase enough renewable energy credits (RECs) to offset the school's entire annual electricity use. With the purchase, which amounts to 118 million kWh, NYU becomes the largest purchaser of wind energy among the nation's colleges and universities. The RECs will be supplied by Community Energy, Inc. from both local and national wind power projects. The green power purchase is one element of a broader sustainability initiative that includes energy efficiency projects and an overhaul of the school's existing cogeneration plant.
