About half of the 51 distribution cooperatives in Missouri, Oklahoma, and Iowa supplied by Associated Electric Cooperative, Inc. (AECI) now provide their customers with green power options. Through the various programs, members of participating co-ops can purchase renewable energy in 100-kWh monthly increments at price premiums generally ranging from $2.00 to $3.50, or 2¢/kWh to 3.5¢/kWh, depending on the co-op. Some co-ops require participants to enroll for at least one year.
AECI currently supplies the programs with renewable electricity derived from co-firing walnut shells in a coal plant and plans to use the future output from two new Missouri-based wind projects. AECI has contracted for power from the 50-MW Bluegrass Ridge wind farm, scheduled to be operational by the end of this year, and another 50-MW wind farm in Atchison County planned for 2007.
The distribution co-ops offering green power options include: Access Energy Cooperative (IA), Chariton Valley Electric Cooperative (IA), Southern Iowa Electric Cooperative (IA), Black River Electric Cooperative (MO), Boone Electric Cooperative (MO), Callaway Electric Cooperative (MO), Co-Mo Electric Cooperative (MO), Crawford Electric Cooperative (MO), Cuivre River Electric Cooperative (MO), Howell-Oregon Electric Cooperative (MO), Intercounty Electric Cooperative (MO), Laclede Electric Cooperative (MO), Lewis County Rural Electric Cooperative (MO), Macon Electric Cooperative (MO), White River Valley Electric Cooperative (MO), Central Rural Electric Cooperative (OK).
