July 2008 - Truckee Donner Public Utility District (TDPUD), which serves about 12,000 electricity customers in the Sierra Nevada mountains near Lake Tahoe, announced a new renewable energy certificate (REC)-based green power offering for its customers. Under the new Voluntary Renewable Energy Certificates Program, TDPUD customers can purchase RECs equivalent to their electricity needs at a premium of 2¢/kWh over standard electricity rates. To supply the program, the utility will procure the RECs from the Bonneville Environmental Foundation from wind resources in the northwest. Revenues generated through REC purchases will be reinvested in renewable energy projects.
