November 2003 - The City of Eldridge, Iowa has launched a program that enables its 1,500 electricity customers in eastern Iowa to support the development of renewable energy sources, such as wind, solar, and biomass. Under the Green City Energy program, residents can make tax-deductible contributions to a city-managed fund that will be used to develop new renewable energy projects. Eldridge residents can designate a fixed amount to be added to their monthly utility bills, or make a one-time contribution. The city is offering the program to comply with a state law adopted in 2001 requiring all electric utilities to offer their customers a renewable energy option.
