June 2009 - Chelsea Piers, a large New York City sports and entertainment complex, is now the largest green power purchaser in the city. The purchase of approximately 22 million kWh of wind energy certificates from ConEdison SolutionsGreen Power program is enough to supply 100% of the complex’s anticipated annual electricity demand at the 28-acre, one-million-square-foot property on the Hudson River waterfront in Manhattan. The ConEdison Solutions program is supplied through wind energy certificates from Community Energy, Inc., which sources the certificates from wind farms throughout the country.

The renewable energy purchase is part of Chelsea Piers’ overall sustainability plan, which includes reduced water consumption, use of sustainable indoor and outdoor materials, supply chain practices that ensure relationships with eco-friendly partners and vendors, and recycling strategies that minimize the carbon footprint of the sports and entertainment complex.
