Kennebunk Light and Power District

August 2006 - Kennebunk Light and Power District (KLPD), a municipal utility serving 5,900 customers in Maine, unveiled a new green power program in conjunction with Vermont Energy Ventures (VEV), an affiliate of Vermont Public Power Supply Authority (VPPSA). Under the Village Green program, KLPD customers can purchase 100-kWh blocks of renewable energy for $1 per block, or a premium of 1¢/kWh over the utility's standard rate. Despite launching the program amid a doubling of standard rates, approximately 3% of the utility's customers enrolled within the first few months.

The renewable energy is supplied by VEV from New England-based small hydro and landfill gas resources. Customers can opt in or out of the program at any time. The program is available to all 14 VPPSA-member utilities in Vermont as well as nonmembers.
