March 2002 - A coalition of Illinois environmental and consumer groups released a "green power" standard to help ensure the integrity of green power products sold in the state's competitive retail power market. To meet the standard, the power must come from new renewable energy sources, be supplied primarily (two-thirds) from wind and solar power, and must result in clear air quality benefits for Illinois.
The standard was developed by the Environmental Law & Policy Center (ELPC), the Citizens Utility Board, Business and Professional People for the Public Interest, the Illinois Public Interest Research Group, the Center for Neighborhood Technology, Conscious Choice, Citizen Action/Illinois, and the Sierra Club-Illinois Chapter.
Under the state's electricity restructuring law, business and government customers already have the ability to shop for power while residential consumers will be eligible to shop starting in May 2002.
