January 2003 - The Energy Cooperative of New York, Inc. (ECNY), a Buffalo-based non-profit organization, is offering a green power option to residential electric customers in the Niagara Mohawk service territory. The renewable energy for the product is sourced from wind (20%) and landfill gas (80%) generation facilities located within New York State. ECNY customers will pay a premium of 1.1¢/kWh for the green power but will save about 0.5¢/kWh by switching to ECNY service. The green power charge will appear on the customer's regular Niagara Mohawk bill.
Last year ECNY received a grant from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) to market green power in New York.
