About The Awards
Electricity generated from renewable sources is becoming increasingly available nationwide. By choosing green power instead of conventional electricity, consumers, businesses, and organizations can support increased deployment of renewable energy technologies that will reduce the environmental impact of electricity generation and increase energy independence.
To recognize the actions of individuals, companies and organizations that are significantly advancing the development of renewable electricity sources through green power markets, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), and the Center for Resource Solutions (CRS) are sponsoring the fifth annual Green Power Leadership Awards. The Leadership Awards banquet will be held on October 24, 2005, in conjunction with the Tenth National Green Power Marketing Conference in Austin, Texas.
The Green Power Leadership Awards are competitive awards that recognize outstanding commitments and achievements in the green power marketplace in the following three categories:
Purchasers — includes members or prospective members of the Green Power Partnership (MS Word 52 KB)
Suppliers — includes green power and renewable energy certificate marketers and providers, and project developers and equipment vendors (MS Word 69 KB)
Market Development — includes renewable energy marketers, nonprofit organizations, companies, educational institutions, individuals, and other industry leaders (MS Word 69 KB)
Nomination Form (MS Word 52 KB)
The Green Power Leadership Awards for Purchasers (Purchaser Awards) recognize exceptional achievement among Partners of the Green Power Partnership. Any party may submit nominations or provide self-nominations and there is no limit to the number of nominations that may be submitted per party for the following three types of Purchaser Awards:
- On-site Generation: to recognize Partners who distinguish themselves using impressive on-site renewable energy applications, including, but not limited to, solar photovoltaics (PV) or wind energy projects. Energy or credits from installation may not be sold to another user.
- Green Power Purchase: to recognize Partners who distinguish themselves through purchases of green power from a utility-delivered renewable electricity program, a competitive retail renewable electricity marketer, or a renewable energy certificate (REC) supplier.
- Green Power Partner of the Year: to recognize Partners who distinguish themselves through their purchase, overall strategy, and impact on the green power market.
Purchaser Awards Eligibility
To be eligible for a Purchaser Award, renewable energy resources and new resource requirements must be consistent with Green Power Partnership requirements and nominees must qualify as Partners by Thursday, September 8, 2005. The requirements for joining the Partnership are described on the Green Power Partnership Web site. Previous winners and nominees are eligible for 2005 Awards.
Purchaser Awards Criteria
The criteria (also listed on the evaluation form) for evaluating Purchaser Award nominations include the following:
- Renewable energy commitment, including the total amount of the green power purchase, or the size and type of renewable energy installation
- Green power purchase as a percentage of total power load
- Percentage of green power commitment that is new renewable energy content (as defined by the Green-e Program of CRS)
- Vintage of the renewable energy source–additional weighting is given if the purchase supported the development of a new renewable energy project
- Communications efforts undertaken to promote the purchase both internally and externally
- Organizational strategy for investing in green power
- Leadership in purchasing in a region or business sector
Additional information required for nomination includes the following:
- Contact Information
- Location of renewable energy generation (if applicable)
- Project budget, including a short description of any innovative financing methods
- Challenges of the purchasing process–this could include market interruptions, internal hurdles, and/or buying a new technology
Nomination Form (MS Word 69 KB)
The Green Power Leadership Awards for Suppliers (Supplier Awards) recognize exceptional achievement among suppliers and generators in supporting increased market deployment of renewable energy technologies through green power markets. Eligible suppliers include, but are not limited to, electric utilities, retail marketers, REC suppliers, project developers, and equipment vendors. Any party may submit nominations or provide self-nominations and there is no limit to the number of nominations that may be submitted per party for the following three types of Supplier Awards:
- New Green Power Program or Product
To recognize green power programs or products judged as "most successful" in the marketplace based on both quantitative criteria, such as customer participation and green power sales, and qualitative criteria, such as overall value provided to customers. For the purposes of this award, a "new" program or product is defined as being first offered in 2004 or thereafter. All categories of green power suppliers (utilities, competitive marketers, and REC sellers) and products are eligible for this award.
- Renewable Energy Technology Supplier
To recognize renewable energy project developers or technology vendors playing a prominent role in supplying renewable energy or a renewable energy technology used in green power markets.
- Green Power Program of the Year
To recognize exemplary green power programs judged on a combination of quantitative and qualitative criteria. Quantitative considerations emphasize program growth through continued effort and persistence. Quantitative criteria include number of customers participating, customer participation rate (where applicable), and green power sales. Qualitative criteria include the type of renewable resources offered and the overall value provided to customers, including but not limited to product pricing and fuel-price stability benefits. Separate awards will be considered for "small" and "large" programs. All categories of green power suppliers (utilities, competitive marketers, and REC sellers) are eligible for this award.
Supplier Eligibility
- Only products and programs that directly support voluntary green power markets will be considered—power used to comply with a renewable energy supply mandate, such as a renewables portfolio standard (RPS), does not qualify.
- The entire renewable energy supply must be sourced from new, eligible renewable energy resources as defined by the Green Power Partnership.
Green Power Program/Product Awards Criteria
The criteria (also listed on the nomination form) for evaluating award nominations for New Green Power Program or Product, and Green Power Program of the Year include the following:
- Resources and technologies utilized, including project in-service dates
- Total sales of renewable energy to program participants on an annual basis
- Customer participation, including total number of customer participants and customer participation rate, if applicable.
- Premium charged for the green power product
- Premium adjustments for fuel-price movements or other external factors
- Other benefits provided to program participants
- Evidence of an annual audit or other formal procedure to verify green power procurement and sales
- Evidence of clear consumer disclosure of product content, price and terms of service in marketing or other public materials
Technology Supplier Award Criteria
