EPA Goes Green with 3 Phases Energy for Houston Regional Office
Commits to Green Power with Wind Energy Certificates for Laboratory Facility
San Francisco, CA — September 3, 2003 — On July 1, 2003, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency began offsetting the power used by its Region 6 Houston Laboratory Facility with wind energy certificates marketed by renewable power provider, 3 Phases Energy Services.
The EPA's power, in an amount equal to approximately 10,000,000 kilowatt-hours over a three-year period, will be offset by certificates for generation from the New Mexico Wind Energy Center, a 204 MW wind energy project in Eastern New Mexico.
"Building on its existing commitment to renewable power, the EPA is pleased to support the development of the south-central United States' renewable energy infrastructure that contributes to rural economic development in the region," said Robert E. Greene, EPA Regional Administrator.
"The EPA's purchase captures the power of wind energy certificates," said Dan Kalafatas, 3 Phases Director of Renewable Certificates. "Certificates are effective tools for facilitating cost-effective, cross-border renewable energy purchases. The EPA is playing a critical leadership role in showing other organizations how simple and easy they are to use."
The renewable energy certificates allow 3 Phases Energy Services and the EPA to share the benefits of the New Mexico project. The EPA's purchase represents the prevention of 6,277 tons of CO2, a key greenhouse gas, from entering the earth's atmosphere. According to climate control experts, the EPA's annual commitment is equal to the carbon dioxide absorption capacity of 1,647 acres of trees or not driving the average American car over 15,534,000 miles.
The New Mexico Wind Energy Center is owned and operated by FPL Energy, with Public Service Co. of New Mexico purchasing all of the power it produces. The wind center is the world's third largest wind generation project.
