October 2008 - Esurance, the online consumer auto insurance company, announced that it purchased nearly 4 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of wind power, enough to offset 100% of the electricity used in each of its permanent offices across the United States. The renewable energy certificates (RECs) were purchased from Carbonfund.org and were sourced from wind farms in Texas. As a result of REC purchase, the company was named to the EPA’s Green Power Leadership Club, a distinction given to organizations that have significantly exceeded the EPA’s minimum purchase requirements under its voluntary Green Power Partnership program.
