April 2008 - The Town of Breckenridge (Colo.) announced a purchase of renewable energy certificates (RECs) to replace 100% of the energy consumed by government facilities in 2008. The town has agreed to purchase 6.5 million kilowatt-hours of wind energy from Bonneville Environmental Foundation (BEF). The purchase was part of a Vision Plan that the citizens of Breckenridge adopted in 2002. The plan also included strategies to reduce the town's energy consumption and carbon footprint, and to implement on-site renewables where practical. In addition, the town has set up a website where citizens can go to purchase RECs to offset their own consumption.
