Duke University

July 2006 - Duke University has become the latest institution to break into the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Green Power Partnership's (GPP) list of the "Top 25" green power purchasers. Overall, the school is purchasing 54 million kWh per year of renewable energy certificates (RECs) supplied through an agreement with Sterling Planet, Inc. The most recent commitment by a Duke program comes from the Fuqua School of Business, which committed to offset 100% of its electricity usage with REC purchases.

The GPP purchaser list is updated four times annually. Combined, the Top 25 purchases amount to 3.7 billion kWh of green power annually.

April 2003 - Duke University has teamed with Renewable Choice Energy, a renewable energy certificate marketer, to issue a green power challenge to its students. The university has agreed to match student purchases of wind power up to 1.25 million kWh annually. Funding for the program comes from savings generated by a cooperative energy conservation effort between the university and Environmental Alliance, a student organization committed to promoting the implementation of sustainable practices at the university. The student group is conducting events during the month of April to promote the challenge.
